Spoilers Ahead for Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 8: "Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie"
The episode begins in the same way as the post-credits scene in "Get Schwifty". Ice-T returns to Alphebetrium, and the exiled Magnesium-J, Hydrogen-F and Hydrogen-Q turn Ice-T into Water-T. Lithium-P informs them that the Numbericons are attacking their planet, and a giant calculator spaceship is seen shooting lasers at the inhabitants of Alphabetrium. A falling rock hits hydrogen-Q, and before dying, he gives Water-T a "prophecy or something." Water-T summons two guns. While Magnesium-J tries to talk him out of it by saying there are too many Numbericons, Water-T responds by saying he better "crunch the numbers." A title card pops up displaying "Water-T and the Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie." Water-T kills several Numbericons and poses enough of a threat to force them to retreat. He sets up a bracket shield that a Numbericon ship crashes into and is picked up in the Glyph Jumper by Lithium-P. Water-T shows him the prophecy, and Lithium-P explains that the "I" of Harmony holds a secret power but can only be translated by mathematicians. Water-T decides to go to Earth, as he knows a mathematician there.
In Mr. Goldenfold's class, Morty listens to hip-hop music during the lecture. Mr. Goldenfold scolds Morty, but his lecture is interrupted by Water T, who asks for his help. At first, Mr Goldenfold refuses, citing that Water T never turned in homework. However, he is forced to join Water T when the Numbericon Sinistar-7 tracks down Water-T and attacks the school.
Numbericon Sinistar-7 cannot catch the group as they vanish with a Helvetica light speed. Sinistar-7 is seen meeting his father, "Emperor Dreadnaught", similar to Palpatine in Star Wars. He punishes her and demands to bring back the "1" of Harmony.
After escaping the numbers with Water T, Morty, and 7, whom they have taken captive, Mr. Goldenfold shares how he was once Water T's math teacher and taught him to rap using math and time signature. Mr Goldenfold deciphers the equation on the artifact and discovers that it's a map that leads them to the origin world of the letters and numbers "E-10 planet". There, they find a primitive alphanumeric species, "primitive googas", that takes them to their village for an Ewok party. Meanwhile, Mr. Goldenfold reveals that he resents Water T for not thanking Math during his Grammy acceptance speech, as they had dinner with the Governor (now the President).
At the temple on their planet of origin, Water T and 7 have sex, which leads to a vision. Sinistar-7's father, Emperor Dreadnaught, arrives and captures everyone. However, his spy Number Eight betrays him and steals the power of the "I of Harmony," becoming Infinity. Driven mad by his newfound power, Infinity kills Emperor Dreadnaught and begins massacring both Letters and Numbericons. With the numbers having the upper hand, Water T confesses to Mr. Goldenfold that he didn't thank math during his acceptance speech because of his father's hatred towards numbers.
Water T, Mr. Goldenfold, and Morty follow Infinity to stop him. They realize that rap is the secret to uniting the numbers and letters. Water-T harnesses the power of rap to unite the Letters and Numbericons in a battle against Infinity. His father's spirit transforms him into Magma-T, who, along with Sinistar-7, uses their love to fuel the I of Harmony and ultimately defeat Infinity.
Later on, at Harry Herpson High School, Morty happily completes his math homework and gives it to Mr. Goldenfield. Magma-T, also in the class, finally hands in a long overdue homework assignment. Despite receiving a bad grade, Goldenfield is overjoyed to finally receive it.
Post-credit Scene:- Rapper Ice Cube, revealed to be an alien called a Geomitron, meets with Magma-T and Sinistar-7 to help save his home planet from an unknown force. The duo agrees to help Ice Cube, leading to a new movie called "Magma-T & Ice Cube in Challenge of the Geomitrons."
Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 8 Review
After back-to-back great episodes, Episode 8, "Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie", falls flat on its jokes and storyline. Rick was missing in this episode, which is the first in this season, and it deeply affected the episode as Rick was the main character overall. Even after they have killed the main villain (Rick Prime in "Unmortricken") early, this season has great episodes such as "That's Amore", "Rickfending Your Mort", and "Wet Kuat American Summer". This episode has some old jokes and lacks emotion.
Pop Culture Reference with Easter Eggs:
- This episode follows the post-credits scene of Season 2's "Get Schwifty," which showed a trailer for a movie called Water-T and the Rise of the Numbericons.
- The title of the episode "Rise of the ..." follows a naming convention that is commonly used in various franchises, including Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Rise of the Guardians, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, among others.
