Godzilla Minus One Spoiler Ahead

After World War II ended in 1945, Kōichi Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot, pretended to have technical problems with his plane and landed on Odo Island. At night, a dinosaur-like creature named Godzilla emerged and attacked the island, killing everyone except for Kōichi and the lead mechanic, Sōsaku Tachibana.

Two years later, Kōichi returned to Tokyo, but he was still haunted by survivor's guilt. He had started a relationship with Noriko Ōishi, and together, they adopted a child whose parents were lost in the bombing of Tokyo. Godzilla was mutated by the United States Operation Crossroads nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll, and it destroyed several U.S. warships before heading toward Japan. The United States refused to aid Japan due to tensions with the USSR.

Kōichi met scientist Kenji Noda while working aboard a minesweeper called the Shinsei Maru. The minesweeper crew were tasked with stopping Godzilla's approach to Japan. They released a mine into Godzilla's mouth and detonated it, but Godzilla regenerated from its injury. Heavy cruiser Takao then arrived and engaged Godzilla but was destroyed when it unleashed its atomic breath.

Kōichi confided in Noriko about the attack, expressing his survivor's guilt to her. Godzilla made landfall and attacked Ginza in Tokyo. Noriko witnessed the attack while Kōichi attempted to rescue her. Meanwhile, the Japanese military tried to engage Godzilla, but it fired its atomic breath, decimating Tokyo and seemingly killing Noriko among thousands of others.

When Godzilla returned to the ocean, Kenji devised a plan to kill it, but the Japanese government refused to help, leaving it up to the remaining civilians and naval veterans to enact it. Kōichi recruited Sōsaku to repair his damaged plane, which he would fly into Godzilla's mouth and destroy it from the inside. Meanwhile, Kenji planned to sink Godzilla to a depth of 1,500 meters. If that plan failed, balloons would be inflated under Godzilla to force it back to the surface, killing it through explosive decompression.

Godzilla was dragged down to 1,500 meters but managed to survive. The balloons were activated, forcing Godzilla up to 800 meters, but it managed to break free. Two ships tried to haul Godzilla to the surface, but they didn't have enough power. A fleet of tugboats lent their assistance, and Godzilla was brought to the surface, injuring but not killing it. Enraged, Godzilla prepared to destroy all the ships with its atomic breath.

Kōichi flew his plane into Godzilla's mouth, destroying its head and overloading its atomic breath, which destroyed the rest of its body. Before he reached Godzilla, Kōichi ejected from the plane, and the fleet narrowly escaped the carnage. Back at the port, Kōichi received a telegram and headed to the hospital, where he reunited with Noriko, who survived the destruction but suffered from radiation sickness.

Meanwhile, a chunk of Godzilla's remaining flesh sank to the bottom of the ocean and began to regenerate.
