Plot Summary (Spoilers Ahead)

Rick and Morty, in the Season 7 Finale, find themselves approached by a man named Fear Dealer (voice by Liev Schreiber) who offers them a chance to explore a "Fear Hole". This Fear Hole is located in Denny's bathroom and is designed to provide a truly terrifying experience. Morty decides to explore the Fear Hole, only to be followed by Rick, who jumps in after him to rescue him from the monsters he encounters.

Upon returning home, they find an alternate Rick who brings a still-living Dianne to the Smiths before dying. However, they soon realize that they are still trapped in the Fear Hole, and every attempt to escape it seems futile. After a few failed escape attempts, Rick makes an offhanded comment about Morty being irreplaceable, which leads Morty to the realization that he's not talking to the real Rick. In fact, Rick never followed him into the Fear Hole.

Morty finally realizes that his true fear is not the monsters in the Fear Hole but the possibility of Rick leaving him. After he confronts his fear and overcomes it, he manages to escape the Fear Hole. Rick is tempted to enter the Fear Hole himself after hearing about Dianne but ultimately decides against it. Instead, he leaves behind a picture of Morty as a token of his achievement in conquering the Fear Hole.

Post Credit Scene: Mr. Poopybutthole reveals that he has stolen Rick's portal gun. Using it, he travels to an alternate reality where he is happily married. In this new reality, he replaces the other version of himself. Mr. Poopybutthole addressed the audience and talked about how crazy Season 7 had been. He encourages them to stay tuned for Season 8. Meanwhile, Amy notices that there is something off about her husband but decides not to worry about it.

Are We Still In The Hole? (RICK AND MORTY Season 7 Episode 10 Review)

The Season 7 Finale explores the theme of "fear" in a wonderful roller coaster ride of emotion. The episode was totally crazy in terms of playing with our emotions. Without any adventure, it's pure dramatic storytelling for the viewers. It's still really hard to guess till the end and even now that "Is Morty Still In The hole?".

The finale of the show was great. Also, shout out to Liev Schreiber's performance as the Fear Dealer, which was one of the finest of the show so far. Morty's biggest fear was Rick leaving him and thinking he was replaceable. When Diane appeared, it caught me off guard. It was nice to see Rick and Diane interact, even though it was all fake. The episode made me happy that the Rick Prime episode was used as the mid-season episode. It made everything feel complete. Morty's realization of his true fear and the sweet moment with Rick at the end was a nice touch.

Pop Culture Reference

  • The title of the episode is a nod to the movie Fear No Evil(1981).
  • The fear dealer resembles Rod Sterling from The Twilight Zone.
